The advocates of censorship

Censorship — the suppression of speech or ideas, which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the government or media organizations as determined by a censor — has a long history. And, if you study the history of censorship you will discover something quite interesting — the advocates of censorship have almost always been, in one form or another, tyrants.

Hard pressed would you be to find a lover of liberty who also was a proponent of censorship.

Go as far back in antiquity as you like and you will find this to be true. The Romans considered it the responsibility of the state to form the character of citizens and so censorship was actually considered a virtue. And, despite what you may have heard about the “greatness” of the Roman Empire, it was one of the most oppressive societies in history.

More recent examples also bear this out:

  • In Russia in the early 1920s, during the time of Lenin and Trotsky, writers and artists were “granted” creative freedom provided they observed the rule of not engaging in political dissent.
  • When Stalin came to power in Russia even this so-called freedom was eliminated. Stalin controlled all forms of communication and did not tolerate dissenting opinions.
  • In 1933 Josef Goebbels, the man in charge of state propaganda for Nazi Germany, burned more than 20,000 books declared “offensive” by the state.
  • Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany, implemented severe censorship in all countries occupied by his armies during World War II. National newspapers, publishers, and radio stations were all taken over by the Nazis or shut down. Listening to foreign radio broadcasts or reading foreign newspapers was punishable by death.

Now, you would think, after centuries of evidence that clearly shows censorship is the tool of the tyrant, that we would have come to a point where no one would advocate it — especially in America, where the freedom of speech has traditionally been valued.

America’s founders knew that free speech is not the enemy of a free society but it’s ally. They knew the only ones who had something to fear from free speech were the tyrants. That’s why they included free speech in the U. S. Constitution:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

So, why do I bring this up?

Because, there are advocates of censorship in America at this very moment — and they occupy places of extreme power. Here is just a sample of what the Obama administration and Obama’s friends have planned for America:

It brings up a couple of questions:

  1. How did America go from embracing the ideas of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to embracing the ideas of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin?
  2. How to we get back?

Bumper sticker of the day:

Thideology news of the day

Item 1: The federal government says individuals have no “fundamental right” to choose what kind of food they will eat.

Item 2: The federal government wants to know more about you — especially how you spend your money.

Item 3: The federal fat police are coming: Proposed bill would require government to track the body mass of American children. Which is probably one of the ways they will justify their intentions to control what we eat (see item 1).

Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ should continue to trust and praise God in the midst of our shrinking liberties in the same way Job continued to praise God in the midst of his suffering. Never, ever forget, brethren, that the federal government of the United States, while ignoring the limitations placed on it by the Constitution, will never be able to exercise power beyond the limitations placed on it by God. God is sovereign — government is not. No government will ever exercise tyranny over a people beyond what God allows. It is important to remember, of course, that God may very well allow total tyranny to come to America. He allowed Babylon to conquer Judah and carry the Israelites into captivity. He allowed the Israelites to exist in slavery in Egypt. He allowed the early Church to suffer extreme persecution in Rome. Even today, there are Christians all around the world who suffer at the hands of sinful men in places of power. And all of this He allows for His own glory. Is the Church in America any different?

SIDE NOTE: A new Gallup poll indicates that the vast majority of Obama’s supporters are people who don’t attend church — now why would that be? I have a 2-part theory:

  1. Obama has a messiah complex.
  2. People who attend Church recognize that there is a God, and Obama ain’t it.

I just found it interesting.

Science catching up to Scripture

A new study reveals that babies as young as 6 months old have the ability to discern right from wrong. Of course, Scripture has declared this to be the case for centuries…

“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts…” — Romans 2:14-15a

God has written on the hearts of men a sense of right and wrong. It’s what we typically call a conscience. Of course, this does not mean we have the ability to DO right and avoid wrong. Put those same children who KNOW right from wrong in a room with limited toys and there will be conflict. Even though they know it’s wrong to take something that belongs to another, they are still slaves to their own sinful nature and they will take the toy simply because they want it.

Remember, Paul’s letter to the Romans that declares we know right from wrong also declares…

“For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’” — Romans 3:9-12

It’s good that medical science is finally catching up with Scripture. Now if we could only get them to understand man’s inability to do good, we could make real progress with people misplacing their trust in government (run by men) and thereby avoid things like these:
